The Center offers three types of programs to international scholars:

The Scholarly English Program

The Scholarly English Program combines individualized language instruction and small scholarly seminars. It is designed for international scholars who wish to be professionally active in the English-speaking academic world. Some clients use the Center as a way-station to prepare themselves for visiting appointments or fellowships.  Other clients are international scholars seeking a language sabbatical that  doesn't compromise their research agenda.  More information about the Scholarly English Program is available below.

Customized Professional Development

The Customized Professional Development Program allows us to adapt our instruction to meet the needs of institutions in the US and overseas.  Whereas many institutions are in the process of internationalizing curriculum and instruction, the Center specializes in the professional development needs of scholars in a global workplace.  Through this program, we are also able to meet the needs of regional scholars who require  greater flexibility.

Manuscript and Presentation Review
The Center also provides Manuscript and Presentation Review as a service for scholars. Our editors have considerable experience preparing academic manuscripts for publication. We also review presentation scripts, and can provide feedback on pronunciation and delivery both for regional clients and, for scholars with access to the appropriate technology, over the Internet.

The Scholarly English Program

Curriculum is organized around helping participants complete a scholarly project in English. Prior to each term, program participants receive a thorough assessment to determine their needs, abilities, and objectives. Project development, seminar topics, and colloquia are then organized and coordinated to deliver the most useful and effective instruction. Additional one-to-one instruction is available if assessment determines that a participant requires additional support. By the end of the program, scholars should be able to:

  • Speak English clearly in different academic contexts, following the conventions of scholarly discourse.
  • Use appropriate rhetorical strategies in composing and organizing scholarly documents in English.
  • Use the vocabulary and idioms that shape scholarly discourse in English, both general and discipline-specific.
  • Develop a  network of scholarly contacts in the US for the purposes of research and scholarly exchange.

Instruction takes place in eighteen or more weekly hours of scholarly seminars, colloquia and one-to-one project development time. Program participants meet for two hours daily, Monday through Friday, with the course instructor. The development of their scholarly projects shapes a curriculum adapted to their particular language needs, abilities, and objectives.

Program participants attend two three-hour seminars each week, and a colloquium related to the research interests of one or more program participants.  These events give participants the chance to practice the presentation and interactive aspects of scholarly discourse in an interdisciplinary setting. Throughout our program, we work to bring participants into a regional network scholars in their field through university colloquia, guest lectures, and academic conferences.

Scholars can enroll in our semester program, consisting of four consecutive four-week terms, or for one to three consecutive terms. Course content will vary each term. Further information about this program, including program dates and costs, is available by request.
